End Notes:
The present edition comprises Dimitri Mitropoulos's complete recordings commercially released on RCA Victor and Columbia Masterworks.
It also contains the Met production of Un ballo in maschera with Marian Anderson, recorded on December 10, 1955, but does not include the Salzburg Festival performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni (1956) or Franz Schmidt's Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (1959), which Sony Classical previously distributed under license.
Mitropoulos's recordings were often released by Columbia Masterworks coupled with recordings by fellow conductors such as Eugene Ormandy or Leonard Bernstein. For this complete documentation of Mitropoulos's recordings, we decided on a case-by-case basis whether to retain the original LP couplings or to add the Mitropoulos material to a different LP.
As for the naming of what is now the Minnesota Orchestra, we decided to be a bit inconsistent by billing it as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra on the cover, back cover and LP spines of this edition, as we believe that Mitropoulos's recordings with this orchestra are more closely associated with its original name, while we decided to credit recordings by the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York under its modern name, the New York Philharmonic.
