Curve's debut full length following their first 3 EPs is another unique, tripped out mix of elements from shoegaze and dance music. The guitars and vocals as well as their unique, rubbery basslines really stand out. The best songs, "Faît Accompli" and "Horror Head," are not just good, they are amazing.

Yet Curve's instantly recognizable sound works against them here. They are too consistent. Every song sounds like Curve and no one else, but as the album plays a sense of homogeneity emerges. The less effective songs blur together.

As a result, the whole album is a slog to get through. None of the songs are bad; Curve simply hews to the same approach too frequently. A change up only comes with the excellent, penultimate track, "Sandpit." But then the album ends with a bonus, the 7" version of "Clipped." It's a very good tune, but it goes right back to the same beat.

Also, the remix of "Horror Head" on 12" is superior to the album version, and the 12" of "Faît Accompli" sounds better than the album.

If you find the debut wearying, I recommend just getting those two 12"s.

Lastly, the sound on this cd is flat and airless like the worst cds, and that does not help. I have not heard a vinyl cut, but I imagine a decent press would easily eclipse the cd.

Along with the first string of brilliant singles topping the indie-charts in the early 90s, Curve's 'Doppelgänger' stands as their best body of work ever since for several reasons - it is naive, disturbingly haunting, sonic and makes it worth every listen you give.
