Notes
The Canadian outer sleeve has three significant difference from other versions:
- The front cover artwork is unique to the Canadian version, showing an illustration of a tribal African bird mask.
- A description on the front cover is also unique to this version: "A primitive percussive sound that strips away the flimsy veneer of civilisation and gets right back to the roots of music"
- The back cover uses the same liner notes that appear on many of the other versions, but adds two sentences to the beginning, suggesting that Mandingo is a real person: "Mandingo...is a young man who's [sic] music has never before been heard outside of his native Caribbean. A man with totally unorthodox musical ideas who has produced a stunning new sound with his very first attempt at studio recording."

My dad was always happy that he found this album back in the '70s. He would always act as if he discovered Mandingo! I eventually inherited it from him. It definitely has its cheesy moments. (Keep it mind it's created almost entirely by older white studio producers looking to capitalize on an exotica fad!) But for the most part it's got some gritty hardcore funk that really has held up over the course of time. The rhythms are particularly captivating. And the electric guitar work is strong. The folks who put this album together clearly got some of the best studio musicians together to make this.
