1980 Echo & The Bunnymen - Crocodiles
I was fortunate to live in England when Echo & the Bunnymen hit the scene and Crocodiles was my introduction. A beautiful, haunting album. An album greater than Heaven Up Here. The bass is rich and flavorful, the drums rhythmical, keeping the songs' tempo wonderfully and of course neither Sergeant nor Ian ever disappoint. In many ways, McCulloch's vocal delivery along with the perfect production make the record the hidden classic that it is. On that note, it is evident that it was intended for LP release, the tracks all flowing one into the other making a perfect swirl of post-punk.
Elements of various bands are heard throughout, with an almost Morrison-like delivery on the title track, and the inspiration of Joy Division obvious as well. However, make no mistake, the band is not limited to echoing the sound of other bands. They certainly created their own sound for themselves, a sound that we would grow to love so much later, but already so noticeable here. The best part of it all is that all the while that one awaits the drop-off point of the album, when the good tracks end and the filler begins never comes. This album is completely heartfelt, almost flawless. It takes effort to find a record this good, and Heaven Up Here or Ocean Rain do not come close. Here we are never bored, the album hammering away at a constant pace. This has clearly been my favorite Echo album. -
Note: On my version the Matrix/Runout on the A-Side is stamped "R/S Alsdorf 58175 A4", on the B-Side "R/S Alsdorf 58175 B3" and additionally etched "GB".
