I have both the eco-mix and the VMP press. I played them at the exact same time on my two Technics MK2s to compare the sound. They sound nearly identical - I might even say that the eco had a tiny bit more bass/dynamics. This is a great pressing of a great collection of songs. Some of the recordings are a little jangly but that's the vibe! Great press. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

my records came in sage green and magenta, both look and sound lovely. not a perfect pressing, sounds exquisite for a majority but some spots for me like title track fall short with some weird ... what sounds like compression? overall very pleased with packaging and sound. fantastic record.

I think the sound fits the material. This record is pretty squishy—in the best possible way. Does anyone complain about Heart of the Congos having a hiss or crackle here and there? Yeah there’s surface noise. It kind of works for me in that Beefheart, field recording sorry of way.
But the album is their best. Sorry for those who disagree but this is fully realized stuff. The other albums sounded disted like a band who could do anything they wanted but sometimes did know what they wanted.
This album is genuine down to its imperfections. -
Theres a small piece of paper, maybe a bit of a label, inside my vinyl - about 8mm x 3mm. It's within the A-side, still plays fine but there's a small 'pop' as the needle es over this piece of paper. I think the paper says "priate" as if it's just the end of the word 'appropriate' or 'inappropriate' or 'reappropriate'... is it a clue for something? Am I under the Silver Lake?
Great songs and beautiful colour but this pressing is warped AF and makes me sad.
Big Thief I believed in you. -
Great album but very disappointed with the pressing. Audible distortion throughout. I have the FLAC and that sounds a whole lot better. Wishing I went for the black version.

Edited 3 years agoBoth my A/B and C/D are a really beautiful blue green with some minor white or brownish streaks. I cleaned with a Spin Clean and then an anti-static dust brush prior to playing. I had a minor skip on Spud Infinity, and the sound quality on Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You got a little iffy, but on the whole I felt the sound quality was good for my copy. I'll be keeping the record and listening to it more.

It is a great album but my eco-mix recycled vinyl sounds horrific! Lots of horrible hissing and surface noise. I will never but another "recycled" vinyl that is for sure. I have now ordered a different pressing from Vinyl Me Please and I pray it is a massive improvement on this pressing.

echoing what everyone else is saying: colours are unique which makes it fun, but sound is disappointing. vocals are mastered way too hot, overall it just sounds kind of wonky. sleeve is nicely textured and pictures on the inside of the gatefold are printed well.
its a shame that so many labels still continue to release low quality pressings like this one. how this got past multiple levels of quality control and testing is startling. maybe they assume that everybody listening is using a low end system and think they can get away with shoddy QC. maybe i just speak for myself, but we have progressed past that. many of us who started with crosleys have graduated to better systems and we want better quality pressings to match that. i'll just have to stick with streaming this one for now -
Weak pressing, fantastic album. Glad I purchased through Bandcamp as these lossless files uncover what was missing from the vinyl. I'm happy to have ed the band on this amazing piece of art. Scary that 4AD (a label with many records I ire and that I'm waiting for a vinyl reissue) let this one sound the way it does. Aren't test pressings a thing? Vinyl is more expensive than ever and more challenging even to make these days. Please make it worth it.
