Reviews

This is kind of a funky sounding recording to begin with. And not in a Funkadelic way (well maybe it is considering the subpar sound quality) Probably needs a remix. But not before Born Again!

I agree it's on the quiet side, and personally find the vocals buried in the mix making it sound kinda flat. Going from a dynamic album, at first I thought something broke on my speakers or I messed something up. I dont think this has ever been a well produced album, but it deserves it because it's a great album, and for vinyl lovers, this is probably the best cut available.

So after all the bad reviews, my curiosity got the best of me and I picked this up from the Rhino website. Visually speaking, as far as the packaging, the artwork, the labels and the records themselves, everything looks and feels top notch in quality. Unfortunately, the mastering is not of the same quality. This desperately needed to be a 3xLP at least. It’s quiet and almost entirely devoid of low end. However, after cranking up the bass on my receiver and the gain on my preamp, I got it sounding pretty good. Separation was very clean, and I experienced no distortion at any point in the record. It does suffer from some compression as well, but I’ve heard worse. The only time I experienced audible surface noise was on Master of Insanity. So there’re good things to be heard here, but it requires heavy EQ adjustment. It shouldn’t have to be that way. This album deserves better. If you don’t want to pay $100+ for an original press of this, I don’t blame you. I also own the original Brazil press of this, and it’s not perfect by any means. This press is a good choice if you just want Dehumanizer on vinyl and you’re willing and able to make EQ adjustments to make it sound okay. With the bonus disc, (which does indeed sound better than the album on the first disc) this is worth the $31.99 or whatever it is on Rhino’s website. Do not pay more than that for it. Maybe one of these years, Tony or somebody will give us a proper 2xLP release of this fantastic album, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I don't understand why they keep putting all the music in just one LP, I was hoping this time they do it right, I don't care for the bonus material, I just was hoping they would cut the album on two LPs for better audio.

The Rhino 2011 release (which i have owned and unfortunatly sold) was noticeably better as i recall, as some other s are pointing out its kinda low but with the volume cranked a bit it still sounds good. And comes in a nice double Lp gatefold set.
I would not pay 100 euros for this though, the releases of this album tend to get pretty expensive. -
Edited 2 years agoYes, this pressing is disappointing, the middle hole is off center on mine it is also pressed very quiet, so it is not that it sounds bad, but that the volume needs to be turned up quite high which makes any surface noise much more audible. It is worth buying for record 2 though. Overall, another missed opportunity and another slap in the face to collectors who waited for this pressing for a long time.

Really disappointed in the quality of this reissue. There's no power to what is probably Sabbath's heaviest album. Disc 2 live material is great, but the album itself could have been done much better.

FYI, if you just got one of these it may be a GZ Media pressing that I just added here:
Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer
I have both and the labels and runouts are different. -
