Notes
New Order's third single, issued by Factory Benelux.
Here, the A-side was the B-side to Procession (Fac 53).
It was their first recording to feature a sequencer, later becoming a defining part of their sound. Last work to be produced by Martin Hannett.
While the back cover first lists Mesh and then Cries And Whispers, the 1981 and 1988 versions play Cries And Whispers as track B1 and Mesh as track B2 (as on the label). The 1986 versions play them as on the back cover (wrong order on the label).
There are several versions of this release existing:
The original 1981 edition: back cover with logo and F.B.N. underneath, no cat# in top right corner, no cat# on the spine.
Labels are grey/white with blue lettering. Cat# FBNL 8 on side B only.
B1 plays Cries And Whispers, B2 plays Mesh.
Belgian pressing.
A 1986 reissue: back cover with logo and F.B.N. underneath, FBN 8 in top right corner, no cat# on the spine.
Labels are grey/white with red lettering. Cat# FBN8 on both sides. Clockwise rim text starts at ~1 o'clock. Made in EEC.
B1 plays Mesh, B2 plays Cries And Whispers.
Small typo on the labels on this edition : "Hannet" instead of "Hannett".
Dutch pressing (stamped runouts).
An alternative 1986 reissue: back cover with logo and F.B.N. underneath, FBN 8 in top right corner, no cat# on the spine.
Labels are grey/white with red lettering. Cat# FBN8 on both sides. Clockwise rim text starts at ~7 o'clock. Made in EEC.
B1 plays Mesh, B2 plays Cries And Whispers.
Small typo on the labels on this edition : "Hannet" instead of "Hannett".
Dutch pressing (stamped runouts). This edition used the same lacquer as the alternative 1986 pressing.
A 1988 reissue: back cover with logo and F B N 8 in bold underneath. Bold F B N 8 also in top right corner and on the spine.
Labels are solid light orange with red lettering. Cat# FBN 8 on both sides. Counter-clockwise rim text starts at ~10 o'clock. Made in Belgium.
B1 plays Cries And Whispers, B2 plays Mesh.
Belgian pressing (etched runouts). This edition used the same lacquer as the 1981 pressing.

I have an edition that matches the exact description of Release 2, but on mine, Mesh (the song that opens with a bass) comes first, followed by Cries and Whispers. For this reason, I always thought the cover was correct, and that the label was wrong, but apparently most other editions seem to have Cries and Whispers first.

Is it possible the track sequence listed here is wrong for the original vinyl pressings? I have a copy I purchased in the mid-80's (seemingly the second repress, based upon the photos of the label here). On my copy, the song beginning with a bass line that has a duration of 3:02 (which I believe to be called "Mesh", but that's a separate issue) comes first on the B-side, followed by the song that starts with a synth wash that lasts 3:20 (which I believe to be called "Cries and Whispers").
This is reversed on my CD single; the 3:20 song with the synth intro comes before the 3:02 song with the bass intro.
However, every entry here, and every other discography I've found, says the 3:20 song with the synth intro comes first on all vinyl editions. I think it's very unlikely that I have some undocumented pressing.
So, can anyone clarify:
- Do their original 80's made vinyl b-side start with the song with the bass line, or the song with the synth wash? [And if it's the bass line...are all these Discogs track sequences incorrect?]
- And, what about the 2019 re-issue? [Which I don't have, but I suspect has the tracks reversed from mine, making it like the CD single.] -
Good to see that the reviews for this and the other ones in the series are excellent. I must stop reading what the Hoffman people say about stuff like these reissues. Apparently these are crap and only the originals are worthy etc etc
To my ears this one certainly sounds excellent. -

Edited 3 years agoLike alot of Factory official reissues, this sounds fantastic. With the bigger question of "why not reissue shit which people are actually looking for (which most certainly isn't New Order as every young person knows them)", I think it's safe saying that these are a must have either ways.

This was mastered so loud that the top and bottom of the wave form are cut off. Still sounds great though. Glad to have the 2019 remaster without the clipping.

The art work is different on the remaster the design goes right hand corner to left hand which is opposite way round. Sound quality is fantastic.

Happy to read the great reviews about this edition! Please someone can tell me if the edition sale in the US is the european import edition? I'm about to buy online and I would like to know before I pull the trigger. Thanks!
