All songs on this record are a delight. Side b remix and the garage style made belters. -

Powerful B side. The bass on the last remix goes hard. -

Yawn. Why make mixes for something that doesn't really need no new versions? Waste of time. -

International electronic and bass don Mella Dee has remixed legendary Basement Jaxx single ‘Red Alert’.
The two-track remix package opens with the artist’s ‘ Beater Mix’, a loopy, stripped-back edit that’s simply made for the dancefloor. Next is the ‘Holding On Mix’, a cut that sees Mella Dee tap into the hardcore continuum with a melange of rave-era wonkiness.
In need of no introduction, Basement Jaxx are a platinum-selling English dance duo who burst onto the scene with their UK #1 album ‘Remedy’ in 1999. They have also scored three US Dance #1 singles, five UK ‘Top 10’ singles and performed at some of the world’s most recognisable festival stages. Released back in 1999, Red Alert topped both the UK and US Dance charts and reached #5 in the UK Singles chart. Pitchfork later ranked it at #69 in their list of ‘Top 200 Songs of the 1990s’.
With a slew of releases via his own Warehouse Music in 2020 including Sidney Street & Mexicanas, the producer and DJ also donned a host of livestream events. A bespoke broadcast with DJ Mag and E1 alongside the likes of Glastonbury and DGTL Amsterdam for their online festivals were among the highlights. His label also saw exceedingly impressive releases from talents such as Leo Pol and Haider. With plenty more music to come from the electronic mystro, 2021 is primed to be yet another big year for Mella Dee, which he kicks off with these exceptional re-worked compositions.
Mella Dee reached international notoriety with his anthemic 2017 single ‘Techno Disco Tool’. One year on, his Warehouse Music imprint won ‘Best Breakthrough Label’ at the DJ Mag ‘Best of British’ awards, cementing his ascent to the upper echelons of dance music, which was completed with his BBC Essential Mix.
A coming together of two generations of British dance music talent, the results on this ‘Red Alert’ remix package are typically dazzling. -

This sterling debut single from the Jaxx's first album immediately thrust them into the spotlight with their own take on the dance genre. Offering up a fun & funky coaster ride that immediately lays out it's party vibe from the off this single includes 3 very different versions of the iconic track. Starting off is an extended club mix of 'Red Alert' that pumps up the beat and gives a worthy introduction to what was already an addictive tune. Including liberal use of Locksmith's 'Far Beyond' for it's bass line as well as samples taken from pedestrian crossings in Australia, this classic 90's tune is the ultimate rendition for any live event.
Next up is a t effort by Erick Morillo & Harry Romero that offers up an awesome New York House take on the single, leaning heavily on the funk style and wasting no time in getting to the meat of the original by playing around with the vocals by Blue James. Spacious and seductive this dub mix has just as much dance potential as it's forebear and could be slipped into any summer set thanks to it's timeless sound, and considering that both producers had been in the remix game since the early 90's you know that 'Red Alert' is in safe hands.
The same sadly can't be said for the last track mixed by Steve Gurley. Starting out as a Jungle/Drum n' Bass musician this reworking delves more into the slick Garage genre that was blossoming at the time. Although making good use of the vocal samples the rest of the tune is unrecognisable and with it's overall sound ages it like milk. In all this single is a mixed bag where it's proven that the reworkings done to Basement Jaxx's singles have always been a bit hit n' miss, but if you like the sound of late 90's dance and the multiple sub-genre's that dominated the charts then this time capsule of a release should be something to check out. -

For me, this is the definitive Basement Jaxx single. I this at the time and fell in love with it instantly. Its so chunky and very funky. The vocals are super catchy too.
This absolutely rocked the terrace at Space in ibiza 1999, i think i hearing Judge Jules okay this first on his radio 1 show.
Basement Jaxx went on to become a successful crossover act after this too. I still think however, that this is still there best record and it's highly unlikely they'll top it. -

As the first single off the Remedy album, “Red Alert” is an enormously fun track -– the lyrics, the chorus, the funky bass, the vocal squeal of pleasure all come together quite nicely. The Jaxx Nitedub makes the track less happy-go-lucky by stripping out the vocals except for a few select screams, while Erick Morillo & Harry Romero Dub goes a slightly cheesier route. Steve Gurley adds some broken beats to the mix with interesting results. The B-side, “Razocaine,” is a darker piece of work, all distorted bass, filtered horns, and modulated vocals, a nice counterpoint to the upbeat “Red Alert.”
