The music is excellent, but unfortunately, the pressing is terrible. Well, that's European eco-friendly policies for you—worse and worse recycled vinyl granules.
-
While I prefer the SKL-R-5207 original UK pressing, I cannot recommend this. It is very compressed and sounds like a CD. If you are looking for this album and can't find an original, go get the 2023 reissue.
-
Wow, what an improvement! It breathes and the bass is firm and prominent without being blurry like many other reissues. Mid's and treble is just perfect. The space used on side A shows a non-compressed outcome as well, opposed to the awful 2011 MOV reissue.
Equipment: Genelec 8361A monitoring - room treatment and set perfectly flat. Rega Ania Pro stylus. Rega RP40 turntable. Mackie MS1202VLZPro mixer. -
This overall trumps the latest 2023 remaster.
Firstly the vinyl compound is much quieter as to be expected from the repective pressing plants.
But the MOV has a crispness so the drums and hi hats sound real instead of muted like the new cut. Yet they arent harsh thanks to the DMM methods of RI.
While the MOV isnt audiophile of mastering in itself its more enjoyable than the 2023 cut and much better manufactured. -
Forget the Remastered From Original Tapes sticker....Its just ok.
The overall sound is abit muted and flat... the snares, hi hats lack crispness and therefore lack transient expression but yet arent entirely smooth at the same time so the worst of both worlds. The DMM process used on the 2011 MOV pressing has a better top end and restores what is missing here while doing do without adding harshness. As a pressing, the MOV is also FAR lower of noise floor. GZ Media cant get close to Record Industry for pressing quality and so it proves once again. This one also has a little lumpyness in the lower end. After multiple back to backs, in my opinion this has less life than the MOV version while being warped with a bit of non fill and generally more regular ticks than the best pressings..... so back it goes!
I'll be gladly keeping my old MOV! -
Edited 12 months agoVery nice remaster. Improves everything but changes nothing. By that I mean greater depth and clarity. Instruments emerge from the mix with a much crisper bass anchoring everything. But still it retains the overall 1970's warmth. I bought this with two others from the 2023 Remasters series

Nice remastering, good soundscape, good pressing.
This is an instrumental release, fine inspiration. -
Easily one of the greatest prog records ever, however, this one sounds dull and lifeless. Even with extra EQ and turned way up it still lacks any dynamic range, especially bottom end. I don't recommend this particular pressing unless it's all you can find.

Now compared to the 2023 reissue, this pressing sounds completely awful and extremely compressed and very clinical. If you are looking for this album go and get the 2023 reissue. That one has much more life and it breathes much more.
