Yes. The tune in the first post was made by me. The later version was released on the Killerhertz Love Byte EP is what it evolved into, though on that EP, I think Distant Dream is the stronger track (though the best mix of DD never made it to vinyl at all)

I'll post in a minute the details of the first track - though you're not going to like it

OK,

So there I am in 1991 (I think!) and Kiss Fm has not been on air for long (legally). It had launched in London and I could just about get reception here in Kent with a good aerial. I was listening to Colin Dale and Colin Favor a lot, so thats where my infleunces came from. I couldn't really play any instruments, but I could string together the tunes I had in my head with a sequencer and some patience

My first music gear was an Akai S950 sampler, a Yamaha SY-22 synth, a TR909 drum machine (yes a real one) a cheap mixer and reverb, and this was all running off an Alesis MMT8 hardware sequencer. I only had a Commodore Amiga at the time and hadn't bought Music-x then. I was never an Atari .

Its been fun reading the posts this evening. Seems the tune in question is a source of much debate and misery and there is a lot of mention of Colin Dale. Well its been the best part of 20 years, but I have it my memory that it was Colin Favor that played this tune. He used to do a spot encouraging people to send their tunes it - it was called Demo Dat Pressure I think. I also have this show on tape somewhere in a box but nowhere handy so can't confirm.

I did two tunes at this time with my old Alesis sequencer and sent them in to the Colin Favor(?) show. The first tune was called Madness (it was rubbish) but he played it one week. The second tune, and I think I did call it Love Byte even on the demo, was played a week later - and that is what the tune ed in the first post is - my original tune from the Demo Dat Pressure slot on Colin Favor's show.

That was good enough for me - an endorsement from Colin . I borrowed some cash to press 1000 records - but not either of these tunes made it. I released a tune on my own label Evasion records called The Enforcer, which sold OK. I was working at a printers back then, so it even had a decent printed cover.

Colin Favor played both sides of this one week after the other, and gave away 5 copies on air as I had sent them in for a competition giveaway.

Now the oringal Love Byte was still sitting there untouched. I had the tune, the riffs and the samples. However, the crowd I was mixing with at the time, said it sounded *too synthy* as it had the chords playing quite a lot from the SY22 keyboard. It wasn't very current as the trend was swinging to very sample based and breakbeaty tunes. The next release of mine went out on FX records, which was based at the studio I was using to mix. The track was Called NRG and for that release I was called Crossfade. One of the riffs in that used the sample sound from Love Byte - I think the original sample came from a track by Shades of Rythm called Excorcist. So I guess after that I felt I couldn't use that sample again. You'll find that on Youtube (search for Crossfade NRG and the B-Side was Crossfade Here We Go Again)

The guts, melodies and sequences from the original Love Byte were than ported over from the Alesis sequencer to my Amiga, now running Music-X and the tune evolved into several mixes, 2 of which went out on the Distant Dream EP.

Both Love Byte and Distant Dream tracks were released not as I originally had them when I went into the studio, they were made a bit more piano-ish and developed whilst being recorded - as I was not releasing this on my own label I had to trust the direction of who was footing the bill for the pressings!

Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Lots of stuff happened after that thats irrelevant, but thats how Love Byte came to be as released on vinyl.

But what about the original most-hunted for mix?

Well I really hate to dissapoint. The mix that was played on the radio show was never released on vinyl. Bigger fool me, as just listening to it tonight has made me ask why not! At the time it just didn't quite fit I guess.

Even worse than that, it was never even put down on DAT. I didn't have one then. Thats right, my tracks were sent in to Kiss Fm and played from a cassette. A ruddy cassette tape and I was on air. Couldn't believe it.

The whole thing was on a hardware sequencer that couldn't save anything. So no files from that. The Akai S950 sampler disks have long been corrupt. The gear has long been sold.

No Cassettes. No Vinyl. No DAT. Sorry guys - if I had a DAT master tape of it I'd get it MP3'd and you could do what you wanted with it.

Probably the only surviving copies are what people taped off of the radio station back in the day, and that sounded a bit ropy then with cassette compression, and then even more radio FM compression when it was transmitted.

Sorry to dissapoint, but I hope it puts a few things to rest and ends some peoples fruitless searches.

The acid sample is of course from Joey Beltram, the main Breakbeat is of course from the Stone Roses Fools Gold, the high pitch riff is from Shades of Rythm Excorcist, the pads are from a Yamaha SY22, no idea where the siren sample is from, and the bassline is just killing me. I can't think of anthing I had at the time that would have sounded like that. It could have only come from the Akai sampler (so could be anything) or the Yamaha SY22.

Has anyone got a full length decent bitrate MP3 of the original broadcast - I'd love to hear it all again!

I've got 2 Faver shows with 2 Killerhertz tracks on, where he played Distant Dream + Love Bytes, but they are the same as on the vinyl - I bought a w/l stickerd copy form Basement Records in Reading when it came out, but sold it long ago for some reason :(

It must be one of the unknown tracks I have - where I didn't write the name down. I'll double check all those tracks tonight - got em on HD, so should be possible to do fairly quick.

damn , after reading that i feel a little dissapointed too , there's nowt worse than being told u have no chance of finding a tune due to circumstances like those given above but.. at least we here all know what that track is now eh?? better than not knowing i say

It's very difficult to exactly recreate a tune. Renegade Genius tried some time back with Trip II The Moon part 2 as you all know on the Acen remix project and did a sterling job, but the original played by Steve Jackson contained some strange noises which were left off the remake.

I only pasted it all together - Ske (also on b2vos) did the string section & had the vocal samples :)

Only proper remake I did was of Tangos unreleased Can't stop the rush - which is now coming out properly with his other vip stuff.

DJ Nee has done some good remakes of unreleased tunes (such as the dub war / johnny mixes, revelations, rabbit city etc) - if we can get copies of all the samples used & a decent full recording of it being played on the radio, it maybe possible to get a half decent remake of it.

PS - with TTTM - we purposely left out the weird bleeps & big piano note near the end as they sounded all over the place & not quite right.

I guess if someone could recreate or sample all the different components of the Killerhertz track in question and paste all that together, a remake would be possible - something to think about maybe as the man himself seems well up for it?!

Maybe put it to Nee and see what he thinks? I've heard some of his tunes, he's a class producer.

Before asking him, we'll need a decent recording of the radio show - only clip i've heard so far is about 24kbs in quality, which is no good for hearing what's needed.

It'd be a dream if the track in question was recreated. But only if it stays as close to it's original form as possible, no speeded up jungle or chipmunk bollox. The original sounds very underground & 'EBMish' belgian techno style even though it contains a breakbeat.

So the 1st job is sourcing a half decent copy of the show or better still one of the 5 copies that were given away - wherever they are.
Maybe people who have contributed to the Pirate radio shows and 'Colins' threads on here could help as they're bound to have old tapes, but haven't seen this thread.

I get the impression from reading Killerhertz post that the 5 copies were of "The Enforcer". I think the only chance for a half-decent recording, if that is the case, is either a good recording from the radio show or, if killerhertz no longer has it on tape, then the tape from Colin Faver-Dale (doubt he still has it...).

hmmmm, someone must have the whole song on tape from the show, as the clip came from it?, So need to find the source of where the clip came from, lots of people used to record favers shows, including me, people do still have tapes...

320Kbs - that's more like it! Not perfect but a vast improvement over the TuneID clip.
So what happens now then?
I'd personally love to have a stab at remaking this, not that I have any studio experience - still got my old Amiga in the loft I bought in '89, sadly no sequencing or sampling hardware though ;-(

Well now we have that, we need all the samples that were used (and to be authentic for the synth sounds, we need someone with that keyboard to replay the riffs as I don't think a vst version exists).

Sample which are easy to get:
The breakbeat.
Let the bass kick (vox)
Shades of rhythm riff.

The sireny type sound will have to be found, as well as the bass synth.

Once we have those, it shouldn't be too hard to stick it all together.
Shame the start / ending don't seem to be on that mp3 - guess we could just have the synth riffs by themselves leading up to where the mp3 starts (and similar on the end).

I assume the Exorcist sample is the 303 arpeggio, stuttering sounding riff / bassline, put through some notes on a keyboard. Unfortunately can't listen to anything posted above due to restrictions at work :(

I did find a low quality copy a little while ago, but still not sure which bit has been sampled - unless it's just one note from the start (inbetween the kicks) ?

Can't find a software synthesizer of the SY22 anywhere though...

If anyone can produce a midi file of the string chord progression, that would be handy - might be able to find a close approximation in one of the software synthesizers or reason...

Its a bit odd for me to find all this fuss been going on about an old track of mine, but its also been a welcome diversion to my work this week - and another piece of my mid-life crisis to ride for a while.

Before everyone goes running to off to do their own remixes just hold on a minute LOL. I've decided to dust off my old boxes of rubbish in storage and see what I can find in them to make this track live again. I have old vinyl, floppy disks and some DATS which may all contain elements of the track. For sure thought I won't find a complete master tape. I'm positive it was laid down before I owned a DAT machine.

I know I can find a large proportion of the samples OK, but if anyone wants to make my life easier, I'd encourage you to put up any samples on this thread so I can grab them ;-)

I've been in touch with a DJ and producer friend of mine, and he's up for the challenge of recreating this track with me, so thats all good. I just have to work out timings and logistics.

It'll take a little while to sort out though. I have many other commitments to other important people in my life right now, so its not going to happen overnight. I have to give priority to other stuff for the next few weeks. But you've waited 18 years so far, and I'm sure a little while longer won't matter :-)

I'd like to redo as authentic as possible, so the more original samples I can find the better.

If anyone can find the siren sample that'd be a great help - no memory of that one at all. Most samples would have come from things on the scene around that time - most notably things that were being played on Kiss FM.

The vox of Let The Bass Kick shouldn't be too hard to find.

There are two basses used in the track. The first is still not clear to me, but the second bass (after the Vox) was a sample played on my Akai S950. It was definitely taken from something played on a Kiss Fm Colin Dale or Colin Favor show, and its not a totally unique bass either.

If anyone has a track with that bass sound please let me know what it is or post it up. Although I think I can get a close match with a soft-synth, anything that makes my life easier is welcome!

If I have to get all flakey and not complete this, then fair game - I'll the job onto someone who can complete - but for now, lets see how I go with it. It was one of my first radio plays ever after all.

If I can get as far as re-recording it, then we'll see about a vinyl re-release. I have no idea of the economics of this nowadays (do people still buy vinyl? LOL)

A bit more digging. It wasn't Shades of Rythm Excorcist, the sound for the main riff comes from Shades of Rythm Homicide. Wasn't that the flip side? Anyone got a copy they can lift the squeaky riff sound from? I'm sure there's a bare note in the tune somewhere.

Just wanted to mension the version of Distant Dream (Easiman mix) on this fantastic piece of vinyl , i believe it was never released on its own. In my opinion it is better than all the mixes on the original promo.

I've managed to find an SY22 disk in soundfont format, and the string/pad sound is there. Needs a bit of tweaking to make it sound just so, but it shouldn't be too hard to match.

The biggest issue (as well as having the time in my life) is the first bass/lead sound that plays throughout most of the tune. I haven't found where it came from yet, nor have I been able to recreate it as a soft-synth sound. I'm not going to do the track until I can make it all sound as close as possible as the original or it won't cut it for me - or anyone else.

I'll keep searching, but I have to be honest it isn't the biggest priority in my life - as much as I want to do it. But everyone's waited this long just to find out what it is so a while longer shouldn't matter.....

I guess that unless he found the missing sample, then its going nowhere... dunno if Bunkz has an update?
