Edited 15 hours agoThis album meant a lot to me when it came out, it kind of re-wired my temporal lobes and still does.
We were used to listening to the CD back in the days, later I bought a vinyl repress (edit: this one and gave it away since the sound was disappointing.
Now with an excellent original copy in hands, I'm totally satisfied. Fluid, full-spectrum dynamics, electronic music made sounding completely organic. Most likely this is the most favorable version on vinyl for it couldn't be done better in my book.
It's turning 30 in 4 weeks time, let's celebrate! -

Just pulled my OG out for inspection & glad to say it has survived well.
Sadly I can't imagine anyone enjoying the same sort of revolution we had with this INCREDIBLE LP, with the duo's current material.
However back in the heady, hazy post acid house medley that the 90's threw back at us (for all our sins), 'Exit Planet Dust' was a godly record of divine content, the word genius could definitely be applied with confidence.
From the first appearances of 'Dust Brothers' mix- tapes (yes cassette's) in indie record stores, Tom & Ed had already cemented themselves in cult status. Their sound was steeped in broad knowledge & unlike anything heard consistently anywhere else. It was mad, unhinged & potent.
For me, this LP & all singles/B-sides subsequently released around it, and the pre 'Chems' releases as 'The Dust Brothers' are the cat's whiskers. A few highlights beyond with merit include the collabs with Q-Tip, and a song about dancing salmons ;-) but this reviewer is happy to firmly stop at 'Dig Your Own Hole'.

The cover of this album is like a sequel to that of Nelson Angelo E Joyce - Nelson Angelo E Joyce.

I cringed when buying this based upon visual inspection at a local shop. But, this was one of those looks like shit records and plays perfect all sides. Go figure...

Mine has a "promotional copy not for sale" sticker covering the barcode on the back of the album cover 🤷♂️
-
I’ve got a Frankenstein copy-it has a upc barcode sticker overtop what I think is the original Europe UPC barcode(sorry I don’t want to peel it up) and down to the right of the white “the chemical brothers”logo is an Astralwerks sticker🤷♂️maybe an early import to US. All in OG shrink!

Just some additional stuff read online
The LP features a series of messages on the run-out grooves. One of them, "Huw is innocent!" on side four, apparently refers to Rowlands' brother. This message would later be referenced on the LP of Push the Button (2005), where the side four run-out message claims "Huw is still innocent!" Lol
The cover of the album was from a 1970s fashion shoot reject box, according to Ed Simons.
"Song to the Siren" was made simply using a Hitachi hi-fi system, an Atari ST, a sampler, and a keyboard, using a sample of This Mortal Coil.

How can you tell the difference between the original 1995 pressing & the 2012 reissue if there's no shrink (so no sticker)?
-
It’s a great debut and their sound is already formed here. Some great beats and tasty basslines. Their music suits vinyl far more than CD which makes it seem sterile and soulless.
-
I have this same UK issue pressing, but it has an Astralwerks label sticker on the back cover (along with a new UPC code sticker over the original bar code).
