Edited one year agoThis is a fascinating release. In the early years of the band, the LP's in the US, had different track listings from the official UK versions. This resulted in a curious anomaly, resulting in an English band having material, across the pond, not available in the band's native country. This is the chief inspiration for this very interesting compilation. Black market Clash brings this material back home, but adding to the excitement is tons of other rare songs also, like 101ers, instrumental, and material that has just not seen the light of day in years. This is a treasure trove, filled with rare nuggets.
If your new to the band, there is no harm at all starting here, but you might prefer starting your Clash collection with more comprehensive collection like the totally excellent 2 disc sets, The Story Of The Clash, that is not in chronological order, or if you want the music chronologically you really will need The Essential Clash, that takes in the incredible Cost Of Living EP, and the mainly ignored This Is England, from a dissolved, splintered version of the band, but hey that's another story, that I might chat about some other time.
Getting back to starting your Clash collection, if you want a sampler, a less comprehensive compilation, check out The Singles, a 1 disc set with the main A sides, originally released on 45RPM, 7 inch vinyl. This will definitely get you and running, and totally in touch with one of the best, most exciting, adventurous bands that ever walked on our planet.
To be honest, Black Market Clash is more for the diehard fans who all ready own, all the studio albums, and want to fill in the gaps, by getting there mitts on this ultra rare, highly desirable rare cuts.
Adding to the excellence is a poster style booklet, that opens up into a decent size. You also get highly informative liner notes explaining everything about the US release situation, and concise information on every song, this will make you fully aware of how lucky you are to have these gems, in your collection. The alternative is taking out a second mortgage and tracking down the originals, and even if you are loaded, you still will not see them all available for sale, as collectors hold, and don't sell these precious records.
