Such a great compilation that I recently revisited. I see the newer pressings don't have the printed inners and the booklet. It's a shame as the printed inners are a montage of all the original 7" singles featured on the album. The info in the booklet makes the compilation so immersive. For the reasons above, I recommend picking up the first press of this. Album highlights:
The Meters - "Cissy Strut": This instrumental track by The Meters is a quintessential example of New Orleans funk. Its infectious rhythm, tight groove, and memorable guitar riffs make it an instant classic.
Eddie Bo - "Hook and Sling – Part 1": Eddie Bo's energetic and dynamic performance on "Hook and Sling – Part 1" is a prime example of the funk sound that emerged from New Orleans. It features a driving rhythm, funky horns, and Bo's soulful vocals.
Aaron Neville - "Hercules": Aaron Neville's soulful voice shines on this heartfelt and powerful track. "Hercules" blends elements of funk, soul, and R&B, showcasing Neville's incredible vocal range and emotional delivery.
The Gaturs - "Gatur Bait": The Gaturs deliver a groovy and upbeat track with "Gatur Bait." It features funky guitar riffs, horn sections, and a catchy chorus that will get you moving.
Lee Dorsey - "Yes We Can – Part 1": Lee Dorsey's "Yes We Can – Part 1" is an infectious and socially conscious funk anthem. The song's uplifting message, along with its infectious groove and Dorsey's charismatic vocals, make it a standout track.
The Explosions - "Hip Drop": "Hip Drop" by The Explosions is a high-energy instrumental track that will get your feet tapping. It features tight horn arrangements, a funky rhythm section, and a catchy melody that showcases the band's musical prowess.
Betty Harris - "There's a Break in the Road": Betty Harris delivers a powerful performance on "There's a Break in the Road." Her soulful vocals, accompanied by a funky backing band, create an irresistible groove.

Great collection, and the booklet that comes w this version is excellent and very informative. Beware of the 2011 repress bc, apparently, it is identical in all respects except that it does not come w the booklet.

I don’t know why Soul Jazz did that, and I’m sure that’s fine for some buyers, but if it’s not fine for you, then ask sellers of this version whether they have the 2000 w/ booklet or 2011 without. If they don’t reply to you, then they almost definitely have it listed incorrectly. That happened to me w two different sellers.

Of all the funk and soul compilations, on various labels including Jazzman, that i have bought, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest! There are so many of these type of compilations and usually they have some good music and some mediocre tracks but this one is killer, nuff classics! Recommended.

Original pressings come with printed inner sleeves and a 12"x12" booklet, later pressings have plain white inner sleeves and no booklet
