Edited 12 years agoLaurent Garnier brings us some exclusives with Coloured City. The title track starts with stuttering drums and after one minute a fantastic bassline bumps in. The build-up here is excellent, but after the beats have kicked back in the track decays into linearity and cheap harshness. "Jackin' Zone" does a better job, again with an awesome bassline. This cut is quite straightforward but pitching up the melody turns out to work. There is a vague climax that is spread over a few minutes in order not to feel forced. The Black Dog takes the tempo of 30's popular "Crispy Bacon" down drastically and adds long echos and a languid - almost jazzy - bass underneath, while moving the actual song somewhat to the background. A nice and inventive spin for a turn, but the low speed makes it not really suitable for long-term listening.

The first two tunes on this EP provide some nice jackin' action, but the real treat here is The Black Dog remix of "Crispy Bacon". TBD takes what's already a classic piece of rough electronic grooves and puts it through dubby filters, giving this banger a more liquid appeal. A high point in the careers of both Garnier and The Black Dog.
