I bought my copy on release as I enjoyed the first 2 albums so much. It’s taken me until now to appreciate side 2, always thought the tracks were superb on side one but just couldn’t get on with side 2; probably has something to do with being on the wrong side of 65 now and changing tastes in music.
I can only agree with other posts that this is a masterful recording, can’t fault it. -
Great album, well recorded and fantastic tracks. Track 1 is just awesome. This and songs from the big chair are a must for anyone’s collection.

This album has been a favorite since it's release. It's not "Big Chair", but not meant to be. This one was always more of a grower. It takes repeated listens to truly appreciate, and once you do, there is no turning back.
"Woman in Chains" still brings a tear to my eye, and what a way to begin an album. So powerful--this was our first exposure to Oleta Adams, and the song soars because of it--and Phil Collins drumming.
Other highlights are the Title song (no need to elaborate on what's already been said), "Advice for the Young at Heart", "Swords & Knives", & "The Year of the Knife".
ohhh...and "Ban's Song".
A truly musically sophisticated album both in writing & production. TFF never sured this level of craftsmanship IMO. -
Edited one year agoThis is an amazing underrated album I’ve luckily owned since its original release back in 1989 and somehow sounds better now than it ever did. Coupled with the gorgeous artwork make this a must have as part of your collection. ‘Woman In Chains’ and ‘Band’s Song’ my personal favourites, with Oleta Adams adding her warm silky vocals to these tracks.

If cutting to lacquer - or in this case, copper - is an art, this is the Masterpiece. Sounds cleaner and clearer than day, has a ton of dynamics and has zero distortion or other issues. Instead of shipping copies of the tapes for local cuttings in other countries, they decided to send copies of this very master disk. It’s THAT good.
I really don’t know who was the incredible GENIUS behind this work of art, but I am a fan of that guy. -
Got an early copy on here and was graded visually as NM but quite a poor pressing. Really uneven wax on track one both sides. There's also a strange whirring. Looks like I'll be getting a new pressing as this really does take away from a lovely looking LP.

Surely must be due for a vinyl reissue? The 30th Anniversay was last year, but strangely they re issued The Hurting instead (which was still awesome). The 2012 MFSL issue is horrendously expensive to buy now.

Found a copy of this release. I can't compare with other versions but the sound of this pressing is truly amazing. You won't be disappointed if you find one.

I too think the production on this matches the musical content, both are world class. I think Oleta Adams performance is extraordinary on Woman In Chains, a true classic. Worth seeking out a good copy of this pressing.

Maybe anyone knows - who was the original US mastering engineer at Masterdisk?
Who had cut this masterpiece??
