Hi all,
I saw some beautiful and expensive Mint sealed copies listed here. Just want to warn you about my story...
A friend of mine picked-up for me a so called "Mint sealed" copy of a Japanese press in Paris () from a store which is listing here and many others "Mint sealed" nice records.
My friend is not a collector/expert and despite the shrink had been opened and the record checked, he didn't see the very light hairlines and spindle marks difficult to see at day light.
The record is more or less NM all around and an insert was missing. It costed me probably twice the price I should have been paying for. It's not bad grading, it's simply robbery.
So, be careful, famous old records still sealed are pretty rare on the market. Only real collectors and very serious stores like some I'm in touch with in Japan and the US can be trusted. And unfortunately more and more robbers like that shop in Paris are re-sealing records to make more money faster. I gave it a try. Too bad for me. A second try is not necessary, just don't buy anything from that guy.

Beware of counterfeits, for some months now someone in southern is pressing counterfeit copys of Bloodflowers and Paris (could be more records, but these are the ones I have seen with my own eyes). These are almost identical copys, only the matrix is a little shorter (missing a letter or two) and the cover is a bit more glossy than the original. Most of these are sold on ebay and other online secondhand-platforms, but I am sure there will be people who try to scam on discogs too.

I’m not speculating on this one, it’s a record I’ve owned for 20 years and listened to for 20 years, and I’d never sell it. Definitely one of The Cure’s best albums ever, but that’s hardly a short list! I honestly think this 2000 UK/Europe pressing does justice to this fantastic album. I don’t agree that this requires a deeper denser mix, this collection of songs stand apart from the incredible opus’ of Disintegration and Pornography and the spartan urgency and expanse of Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Some of Robert Smith’s most excruciatingly beautiful guitar work here. Can I bang on more about this album? You bet! Absolutely Fucking Gorgeous.

How does this original UK pressing sound? Is it just a CD slapped on vinyl or does it prove superior to the CD sound? Can’t see ever dropping money on this if it’s not a great pressing.

Listening back to this album, I do still like it - it's like WMS never happened - but I'm reminded from the start that the vocals sit SO far forward in the mix (which is also very bright). Seemed a strange choice first time I heard it and still does today. A more dense mix of this album, and pushing the vocals back, would have done wonders for it IMO. The music and instrumentation is there to that sort of mix.
