Edited 2 months agoAlbum Revolution #9:
This journey that I am taking on with the ONE and ONLY "Quincy Jones" has been INSPIRING!!!! I have seen the MANY FACES of "Q" (so to speak), being that he transitioned from "Jazz", to "Fusion" and "Soul & R&B"....That even gave him the COURAGE to tackle "Funk", thanks to his association with "The Brothers Johnson"....
But now, it is 1978, and the World was ENAMORED by the "Disco Movement"....By this time, possibly 50% of the sounds you heard (whether is was on the Radio or from the Disco Techs) were "Disco" based ts....
"Quincy" was also FEELING the BEAT...So, with that we have, "Sounds ... And Stuff Like That!!"....
As ALWAYS, "Q" brought along a HOST of Friends like, "Eric Gale", "Ralph MacDonald", "Richard Tee" and "Steve Gadd"....He also GOT DOWN with the FANTASTIC Husband and Wife Artists and Producing team, "Nick Ashford" and "Valerie Simpson"...."Q" also brought in his "God-Daughter", the ONE and ONLY "Patti Austin", along for the party...
Hailing from New York, "Ms. Patti Austin" had ALREADY made a HUGE career for herself, Recording for "Creed Taylor's", "CTI" Label....So it was only FITTING, since she already was part of "Q's" Family, to have this FANTASTIC Vocalist on board!!!!!
Now, FINALLY getting our bearings down, we start with the BUMPIN' "Title Track"....
With the story based on meeting someone at a "Disco Tech", this GET DOWN t had EVERYONE doing the BUMP!!!! With "Ashford & Simpson" being the anchor Vocally, they also ed the Mic to the ONE and ONLY "Chaka Khan"!!!!! Even though she was still a part of "Rufus" at that time, I am sure that she could not resist a Phone Call from "Q" to come in and GRACE this t with her POWERFUL Vocals....This BOMB t is also anchored down by a RIGHTEOUS Guitar ("David T. Walker") and a FLOATING Saxophone ("George Young")....GET DOWN!!!!
"I'm Gonna Miss You In The Morning" is a VERY Smooth and Sultry t...."Ms. Patti Austin" lends her OHHH WEEE Vocals on this one, and she is ed by the ONE and ONLY, "Mr. Vocalist, Luther Vandross"....We again, have a Cheating t going here (Naughty, Naughty)....The t is topped off by the ONE and ONLY "Tom Scott" on "Lyricon".....
The Bass flavored, "Love, I Never Had It So Good" has "Patti" again GRACING her Vocals in a Sultry way....She is ed this time by "Wattsline" member, "Charles May".....
Next, "Q" had a "Q Vision" for "Herbie Hancock's", "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", originally from "Herbie's", "Warner Bros." album, "Fat Albert Rotunda"....In order to pull this off though, "Q" called "Herbie" himself to help him put a "Q" spin on it....It's not too far from the original, it just has a more Sultry sound to it (with Vocals)....It also has "Hubert Laws" on Flute, and "Jim McCurdy" and "Harry Lookofsky", helping the Violins stay in the POCKET.....
"Love Me By Name" has "Ms. Patti Austin" SWOONING us Vocally again....Her Vocals just FLOATS on another Sultry Track that "Q" CONSTRUCTED EXCLUSIVELY for her!!!!! "Herbie Hancock" FLOATS on Keyboards, and "Eric Gale" KILLS the Guitar!!!!!!
Again, not needing the "Stevie Wonder Rule", "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" continues "Q's" love for the Artist...Having "Ms. Patti" over the "Herbie" Keyboards, "Hubert" Flute, and "Tom" Lyricon, we have another FLOATING Sultry t....I used to say that NOBODY could EVER do "Stevie"....BOY I WAS WRONG, because "Q" NAILED it EVERY TIME!!!!!
"Q's" Vision for the "Doobie Brothers" CLASSIC, "Takin' It To The Streets" was VERY INTERESTING!!!! Having "Mr. Luther Vandross" and "Gwen Guthrie" on Vocals, it has a Military Drum feel, then it goes into a Smooth Groove, with "Michael Brecker" capping it off on Saxophone....The ending then BREAKS OUT in "Gospel" fashion....Of course, it's not better than the original, but it REALLY is GOOD!!!!
Again, at this stage of the game, "Quincy Jones" could do NO WRONG Musically and Creatively...This was (Again) what he did...At the time, NO ONE could stop this Man from CREATING, ESPECIALLY when People KEPT coming to him!!!!! Think about it, right around the corner was, "The Wiz"!!!!
So, with "Sounds ... And Stuff Like That!!", we just continued to MARVEL at "Mr. Quincy Jones"!!!!! -
Like the m McDonald cover taking it to the streets
