P & C 1980 Cherry Red Records
© 1980 Virgin Music (Publishers) Ltd. except B1 © Sound Diagrams and B7 © Carlin Music Corp.
Manufactured in England
1st pressing shows the original band photo on the back cover.
Later pressings show the band photo again, but with the heads cut off or just the note "Stay tuned for further details" instead.
Some copies came with a b&w foldout poster and/or a Cherry Red Records 'catalogue' printed inner sleeve.
2nd pressing still has band heads showing on back cover, but 'Kill The Poor' also listed under 'Also Available', and run-out groove etching reads 'Do you deserve to live' instead of 'Well who are the brain police ???'
Some first pressings have matrix inscription "Do you deserve to live??" and no response to "Is life as boring as you are??".

Is there any vinyl version of this record that actually sounds great? I'd love to buy one but it's been hard to find someone not complaining about the pressing quality!

Cherry Red Records announced that 5 April 2024 they will release a reissue ‘cut from the most recent master’. Don’t know what that means but hoping that this is the one we have been waiting for.

Having now heard all the cd versions of this, I can DEFINITELY confirm that the Alternative Tentacles one from 2000 is the one to go for, the 1999 UK remaster is too loud and compressed, and the later remaster on Manifesto is totally RUINED by John Cuniberti slowing down the pitch on Jello's voice to make it sound "correct", which it doesn't, it just sounds slow and strange, and it takes away all the energy. The pitch was already slowed down in 1980 by Porky right after the first pressing, which actually did run a little too fast, it didn't need to be "fixed" again, it was PERFECT the way it was. The 2000 press also doesn't seem to hurt my ears like the 1993 cd I used to have, I think that one was a little too shrill. And of course, like all newer cds, the Cuniberti remaster on Manifesto is also too loud and compressed, just like the 1999 UK cd. And I haven't even heard this new "2022 mix", and I don't ever intend too, this album has been screwed with enough over the years. Glad I FINALLY found a perfect copy.

I have the 1999 CD release with Cherry Red. The bonus CD is added here. However, I love listening to this album on vinyl from the Polish label Polton from 1987. For the times of the People's Republic of Poland, behind the Iron Curtain, in communism, the album sounds great and is released at a high level.

...from all the great punk albums or singles i heard between 1977-82, this
is definitely the most powerful & radical. better than any coffee to wake
you up in the morning. singer jello biafra is an original figure of his own,
also a famous record collector... -
Has anyone ever gotten his hands on a George Horn remaster on A.T.? It was done at Fantasy studios and according to an article by Jello Biafra, this pressing do sound well. I can't seem to find that A.T. pressing here on the database. Any hints?

Edited 4 years agoAccording to an interview with Jello from 1980.. the band never recieved a test pressing from Cherry Red Records and were disappointed with the sound (lack of bass guitar) on the initial pressing which was released in late September (one music magazine article noted 29/9/80).. During their UK tour September 25th to October 11th.. it was remastered while the band were in London..
I assume the earliest version featured a different (more trebly?) mix. -
I need some help identifying my press. It's similar to this press -
https://discogs.descargarjuegos.org/Dead-Kennedys-Fresh-Fruit-For-Rotting-Vegetables/release/12128218
except the band on the back of the cover are all headless. I bought it second hand and it didn't come with any poster and in a generic sleeve.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
