Edited 5 years agoAnother release that completely took over the player for a good year upon release. Elements of Talking Heads, Radiohead, The Cure, Joy Division yes, but this album was so different with its off-kilter vocal delivery and unique emotional content. this was released after 911 so it just felt right ("NYC"). An inspired album, and can stand the test of time.

Quite frankly, a bad album that was produced badly and pressed at an even lower standard. I have heard multiple vinyl versions of this played around the city and they are all hideous sounding.

I'd like to consider this a comment rather than a review. I don't expect anyone else to share my tastes. I think that this album represents a stellar debut. It's impossible to state that without acknowledging the popular and extensive criticism that Interpol is repackaging an older sound. They certainly owe a debt to Joy Division, The Sound, The Chameleons. But they bring much to the table in a skill for memorable tunes and effective arrangements. This album is solid to a degree that is positively rare. For what it's worth, highly recommended for anyone who likes the smoky, spiky rock music of the early eighties post punk.
