Hip Hop Citizenship Test: Are You An Outkast?
All too often in the 90s hip hop scene a group would produce a single and totally fail to make any impact beyond some week long radio waves, but there was no way Outkast would fall into that same hole. Their first and most influential album of their career, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, did two history-shaping things at once: solidified the foundation to the rest of Outkast's super successful hip hop career, and paved the way for other huge hip hop acts hailing from ATL like Ludacris, Goodie Mob, and Bubba Sparxxx by putting the Dirty South on the hip hop radar.
There were only a few albums that had players wondering if the second Golden Age of Hip Hop was real. Along with Illmatic, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and Midnight Marauders, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik showed them it was real. The best part of the musical formula used for Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was that it was simple: hip hop 808 beats + smooth funk and soul + the land of ATL. It's so easy to quench your appetite for 90s hip hop while being chilled and relaxed by the P-Funk flavor of Outkast's debut album, released when you could make up your own long words and put them on an album cover and it be unquestioned. To summarize it, hiphopinstantclassicompletelydopetastic (copyright pending...)
To summarize it for real this time, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik contains the undeniable essence of Golden Age hip hop, Dirty South lyrics, and soul-filled music that fits perfectly in your trunk. Go down to East Point, College Park, Decatur, and the SWATS, absorb this hip hop capstone, and ask yourself this one question: are you an Outkast? -
