Notes

Please note the main differentiator between this, 1963 black label / silver text repress, and the 1964 represses which can be seen here, is the absence of the centre label text,

'SOLD IN U.K. SUBJECT TO
RESALE PRICE CONDITIONS,
SEE PRICE LISTS.'

Please also note the following differentiators present on this variant's label.

1 - The perimeter rim copyright text beginning, 'The Parlophone Co. Ltd' is in title case.

2 - The label publishing text, 'RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1962' is in upper case.

3 - The lower case 't' in the 'Gt.', in the label text 'Made In Gt. Britain'.

4 - The large 'Parlophone' logo at the top of the label.

In January 1963 Parlophone ceased production of its red label design. Consequently original issues of Please Please Me were the only Beatles singles, released in the '60s in the UK, with these red labels. The red labels included the 45- prefix in the catalogue number, to differentiate from 78 RPM records, even though Parlophone had ceased the production of these by the late '50s.

I just acquired a 1963 copy and it is definitely the Ringo on drums (no tambourine) version. Which probably isn't surprising - they didn't create new single stampers when the tape from 4 Sep 1962 was lost. This seems to contradict what others have said - but definitely No Tambourine on my copy.
Matrix numbers as above plus at a quarter turn left from those:

    P

    and a quarter turn right

Technically, this is the second pressing. The second pressing, R 4949, autumn 1963. Standard procedure at Abbey Road Studios at the time was to erase the original two-track session tape for singles once they had been “mixed down” to the (usually monaural) master tape used to press records. This was the fate of two Beatles singles (four songs): “Love Me Do”, “P.S. I Love You”, “She Loves You”, and “I’ll Get You”. However, at some point the mixdown master tape for this song was also lost, and apparently no backup copies had been made. Thus, for many years the only extant recorded copies were the red label Parlophone 45 rpm vinyl records pressed in 1962. By the time the tapes had disappeared, the song’s 11 September 1962 remake featuring Andy White had been released. EMI would not have been too concerned about the loss of the 4 September take, therefore, as it was now considered obsolete, and they may not have anticipated ever having any use for it again anyway.

The original tape of ‘Love Me Do.’ It was removed at the time the Beatles’ Hits EP came out (August-September 1963). Therefore, for the second press “Love Me Do” was used Andy White version. In 1967, when Ringo’s version was discontinued from the EMI catalog, the lacquer, mother, and all stampers for the UK 45 were destroyed, thus making it impossible to press any further first-generation releases.

Black label with silver print. The publishing year was printed on the label, as “RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1962″. “Parlophone Co. Ltd.” printed at the start perimeter print. Can be found with PT, MT, MPT or KT tax code. Push-out center. Matrix numbers: Side A: 7XCE 17144-1N, Side B: 7XCE 17145-1N.
The difference between the 2nd pressing and 3rd pressing is the Tax Code 3rd pressing is KT only, there you have it!

This is the "Andy White" re-recording only the original 1962 "Red" labels and the 1982 limited edition 12" Red labels contain the original "Ringo" version. the 1982 7" does not and is easly distinguishable by it's label text stating "mono" and reference to McCartney's MPL communications.

All original Black label pressings had no EMI resale label text all
later re-presses do have "sold in UK etc"
later-later re-presses have no EMI resale label text but carry additional boxed EMI logos
all final vinyl runs are IEP painted silver automated injection moulds
