No stars, not even a lucky star with the mastering of this picture disc, what did they use to make this? A potato? It’s actually really sad but besides the sound it’s really cute and I love a good Japanese Madonna LP even if I have to track down a normal copy soon…. 😭😂

I have two copies of this picture disc at the moment and the difference in sound on side 1 is notable. On one copy there is little to no stereo separation and the sound is muffled and fuzzy. For example, the distinctive high hat on "Borderline" is hardly there. The second copy sounds better, relatively speaking, with proper stereo and fuller sound. Side two is the same on each copy and sounds ok. Both discs are mired by surface noise and low volume levels. The deadwax info on each is identical and only side two says "mastered by Capitol."

Edited 4 years agoSo ridiculous that this was retitled "The First Album". Do they do that for every other artist or band with self-titled albums? Imagine the outcry there would be if The Ramones "The Ramones" was changed to The Ramones "The First Album".

I did clean my copy before playing, that usually means all the difference in the world nowadays, don't know why.
On some tracks, like Lucky Star, the sound is a little more flat/less defined and less stereoed as compared to my original German pressing.
Holiday on the other hand sounds basically the same. I do not have the new 180g pressing, but all in all I consider this to be a decent pressing. Why an audiophile would listen to Madonna's first album let alone on a picture disc is beyond me..

I just played my RSD copy versus the 180 gram remaster - the difference is NIGHT AND DAY. I will never subject my ears to playing the picture disc. This is truly just a cosmetic piece. I've heard worn out 8-track tapes with better fidelity.

I love this replica. Looks brighter than the original and to me, quality sound is totally cool! It plays with any noise on my Denon turntable. So happy to have it!!

Only buy this if you have no interest in playing it. It sounds like a 5th generation cassette copy, played on a tape deck with dirty heads.
