I bought this new when it came out, I was still at school. It changed my musical life. If you only get 1 minimalist record then get this one. It spawned so many movie and advert soundtracks yet its composer is though famous in his field not widely known outside it. Steve Reich is a great treasure and still composing.

One night at a show in ‘96/97 some folks I know were nearby talking music were talking about Steve Reich. Had never heard of him. A couple of months later I found the desert music. It was cool but didn’t stick. Found a clean copy of this at an outdoor flea market in the early 00’s. Loved it from the first spin. Remains such an inspiring and moving piece of music.

This recording was recommended to be by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith at Ableton Loop 2018. I was part of a small group that has a private artist session with her about music listening. It was a fantastic experience.

Hard to express the depth and transcendence of this recording. Beautiful mastering. The music surrounds you so thoroughly. If you have a clean copy it is hard to match.

If anything in the ECM catalogue deserves a vinyl reissue it's this. There hasn't been one since 1988! So much garbage out there and they can't repress a classic like this?
