Edited one year ago2020:
Get your hands on this Japanese pressing if you can. Insane Demo Disc quality on quiet vinyl - smokes all my other copies including a UK first press
7/2/23*******
Need to revise my review.
Gave a good listen to Overture and It’s A Boy on three pristine near mint pressings, 1st UK, A//1 matrix side 1; the Japanese press mentioned in the review and a 1st US press.
All three had AMAZING sonics and each would be among the best sounding records of any collection. The UK though is the best, no question, the Japanese pressing 2nd, and the US 3rd. I was wrong 2+yrs ago.
The UK press was noticeably bigger, fuller, richer and smoother than the Japanese and US presses. The UK has perfect tonal balance and MASSIVE bass - the sound fills the room. Vocals and horns are huge, live “in the room with you” with no distortion or ear fatigue at louder levels.
The Japanese press is insanely good too, almost equal to the UK but when you play them one after the other you do notice the obvious edge the UK Track press has - the Track press may be one the best sounding records you will ever hear, it is a special record indeed.
Maybe I simply compared the UK to the Japanese press by memory instead of true a/b at the same time but not sure, a lot of time has ed since the 2020 review.
That all said my Japanese pressing after doing research is sort of a hybrid. It does have the two discs on the label, the obi is from 1969 but has a 3500 yen sticker placed over the 3000 yen printed price at the bottom. The side 1 matrix is similar to what is listed as a 1973 reissue with
matrix MP-9313A B3FB1LJ0 A 1 7 and MP-9313 is to the left of the spindle hole. Now not sure if my copy is either 1969 and the lacquer was also used in 1973, or maybe 1973 press and they used old obis and simply stickered over the old price. Either way it is absolutely amazing sound and damn close to the UK!
Oh, the US is amazing too, among the best sounding records you will ever here but not quite to the other two’s insane level of sonics. Hope this helps you.
