In the Zappacast podcast episode "The Grandest Wazoo (& Waka Jawaka, too!)", host Scott Parker asked Vaultmeister Joe Travers the question "Have you ever been working on a project that you really wanted to finish, and you just could not find that missing piece?". His response included a reference to Orchestral Favorites:

Joe Travers: I was really bummed out that I didn't find the very end of the "Orchestral Favorites" concert when Beefheart comes out and plays. And that was not recorded, I don't understand why they didn't record that. Or if it was recorded, then it was removed and I just haven't found it.

I dragged my heels to buy this album for DECADES while enjoying Frank's LSO albums Vol I and II plus the Boukez Conducts. Why? Because I'd heard Frank didn't like it!
I couldn't resist this 40th anniversary edition though....on LP (I don't care about the bonuses on CD). And WOW Frank, you put me off too long, mate...this is great! Don't delay, fans of the orchestral Frank. Expect plenty of 200 Motels related stuff. The town is still like a tuna sandwich. You can bet that his brass and string parts are bestrewned with 'molto espressivo' amd 'molto vibrato'. Ha ha! But then it ends with such melancholy. No wonder the music historians don't know what to do with him!

Frank's live guitar work and control of on Prunes is beautiful.
A pre-cursor to his sound on Zoot Allures. Even then though, Bogus Pomp is the showpiece. I would've given this a perfect 5 stars rating were it not that Strictly Genteel isn't as magnificent a piece as the others. Ah well.

Pressing is very clean. Slightly over-compressed mastering but it doesn't do any harm. Enjoyed it VERY much. Thank you Frank, wherever you are. I appreciate your orchestral work more the older I get.

Another fantastic Zappa Record re-release, yet when I look at what they put on the CD version can’t help but wonder why no extra material on the vinyl version.

Duke of Prunes has exquisite guitar tones. The album is not easy listening but highly recommended for curious listeners
