One of the high tide marks for Autechre, not in the least due to the incredible distribution network that Warp Records had built up around the world prior to the internet and streaming media dominating. Whatever corner of the planet, a music journo was sent the enriched version of this to soak up the A/V spectacle.
Most of us through this was generative, and while it was not, it sparked the inspiration for many designers to begin working out how to do just this (be it via the band's own favourite Max/MSP or emerging tools like Touch Designer). A major moment in the music visuals community, and an almost inseperable part of this release. Few would refer to Gantz Graf without the visuals, and yet few would know the story of designer Alex Rutterford creating it. And in an era of... slow... render... times... no less. -

Great EP, but the pressing sounds rather flat. This is the only Autechre record I own that sounds considerably worse than its digital version. -

Despite its age this title track never feels old. It's the video I put on for people to explain IDM and the concept of machine made future jazz.
What amazes me that when released it felt far ahead of others but over time I find even pop music has embraced some of the songs weird tricks. -

Something has to be at (or near) the bottom of every 'ranking' pile and this is very near the Autechre basement. Not because it's bad, although Dial. is a bit boring let's face it, but because it is brief. Gantz is over too soon, but goes out with an electrolytic capacitor 'pop'. Dial. is a bit boring, let's face it, and Cap.IV tries to repeat the trick of the Album closer Lentic Catachresis from Confield, but does succeed as no-one dares tread where AE go, other than AE. So in summation, so-so. -

I didn't understand the title track until I saw the video. Got it now. We forget, maybe, but just because your phone can make that kind of video in realtime now doesn't make it any less mindblowing that those visuals were rendered in 2002. -

I'm discovering Autechre and so far I really like this EP. I didn't necessarily like it on the first listen. I think it takes a few listens to understand the song structures. -

And Cap.IV ? After years of listening to Ae you think you 'know their stuff' - but I just spent a moment in another room and heard totally different [slow/hip-hop] hidden rhythm in the first half of the track. When I came back to the deck room - it was gone. Long live Ae and psychoacoustics ! -

"Dial." slowed down sounds just as awesome [just discovered that] and some % longer - for the same price, haha !
