The Horace Silver Quintet – Doin' The Thing - At The Village Gate

My only "complaint" could be regarding this heavy weight and great-great sounding release with world champion music on it that the record itself is not 180 grams but 186 grams weight.., LOL. So 10 out of 10, a recommended one!

Great record and pressing, sounds loud and clear. Mine is DG side 2 only, which differs from the images for reference. An amazing set that is still semi affordable in 2025. Snag one while you can

My copy has some pretty nasty spots of distortion on the horns. Just me? Kinda sounds like it's in the master tapes.

One of the best reissues I have bought in a while. I don't have an original, but I'd be surprised if it was much better. Definitely on the brighter side, but that's probably how it was recorded. Silent vinyl, great dynamics and about 100 euros cheaper than an OG in good condition.

My copy is quiet and as flat as it can be.
However, I don't find this to be in the best end of Horace Silver's albums, so I'll give it 3 stars for the music and 5 for the mastering/pressing.

Sibilance when Horace is speaking, otherwise sounds fine. Sleeve is flimsy, record is a solid weight

Just compared this to my original and the more I compare these reissues I become critical with them. Sorry, to me the original is so much warmer, more dynamic, more overall power, it dwarfs this pressing. For the price they are ok, no question, but don't believe you have more than a decent reissue.

This was always a well recorded session and KPG with Optimal on pre covid form allow it to shine indeed. It sounds quite fantastic and the playing is faultess, just wonderful joyful jazz! A poly lined sleeve would have been nice. Theyve fixed that now, but instead present you regular non fill defect LPs instead... ahh Optimal 2022 how i often hate you!!

Wow! The first needle drop just blew me away. Incredible in every way a record can be. Soundstage, analog smoothness, clarity, depth. What an unassuming little gem for my collection!
