This is my first and only Tone Poet and I'm disappointed with the sound. The low end is a bit distorted and the bass lacks any discernible tone. Piano and vibes sometimes blend in together more than is desirable. Plenty of my normal blue note records sound better than this one. Pretty good album though, the first two tracks are especially good.

Edited one year agoThe combination of Hutcherson, Tyner and Henderson is almost too incredible. This album swings so incredibly well. A must have if you're a bop fan. I see some negative comments about this reissue, but it sounds wonderful to my old ears.

I like the music, but this record honestly doesn't sound that good. The bass seems a little boomy and undefined. Worse, the vibes don't sound that good. Vinyl is reasonably quiet and, in fairness, Henderson's horn sounds fantastic. I have a modest set-up, so maybe I need better equipment to fully appreciate this one, but all my other Tone Poets sound terrific on my system...was just listening to Lee Morgan The Rajah and it sounds so good I want to cry!

Not all the Tone Poets resonate with me and this is one of them. I wish id listened to it before i bought because this isnt a patch on The Kicker. The mastering seems mediocre. Or perhaps its as good as can be, so perhaps i should say the recording quality was mediocre? Either way for me still this is the sort of rather boring, melody deficient, tired playing jazz that my jazz dodging mates sometimes laugh at me for. In a handy twist of fate the RTI pressing is unacceptably poor so i can return it without guilt.... off centre on side 1, lump of excess vinyl stuck in grooves on final track and frequent loud clicks mean the pressing isnt good enough even if this was to somehow miraculously grow on me.
YMMV as ever both in tastes and pressing quality!! -
Guess it hat to happen at some point, my 19th TP is warped, other than that no issues.
Will get replacement, warp is bit too bumpy. -
What a great recording! I don't know why I held out for a while on this one. Clean, flat pressing and very detailed sound. A real pleasure to listen to. Another wonderful BN TP release!

I’ve played this excellent album through twice and am hearing a continuous “ripping” type distortion coming only from the LH channel on portions of B2 and B3. It’s not excessive but since everyone is praising this as perfectly clean recording I thought I should check to see if anyone else has experienced this anomaly.
-
Awesome album but for a “Tone Poet” series this pressing only sounds okay to me. Both my copies of “Unity” and “The Sidewinder” which are not TP, sound much more clearer to my ears.

Great version of this commanding post-bop album. Highly recommended for Hutcherson fans. -
I have had an original and the heavenly sweetness version, and this is the most balanced of the three. Henderson's horn just tears out of the speaker and lights up the room. EDIT: Tyner seems to still be obscured, on balance.
