Gotham Recording Studios

Profile:

Recording and mastering studio in New York City (NY, USA) active from the 1950s through 1970s. Known as the site of early recordings for Elektra label.

In 1954, the studio underwent a $20,000 renovation and refurbishing which included a 50' by 25' stage which could accommodate a 40 person orchestra. Part of audience space was converted into the studio allowing for a 70 piece orchestra, a new "sterephonic" console permitting the recording of three-dimensional sound was built by the Gotham engineers. The console was capable of mixing 14 mics simultaneously as well as two echo chambers. Also included was the installation of recorders in the control room allowing for instantaneous playback and a connection with Gotham's 46th Street Master Control Room where an immediate acetate could be cut from the studio. All of this was designed by chief engineer Stephen F. Temmer. By June 1954, it was functioning as the first stereophonic sound recording studio in New York.

The studio's mastering rooms were equipped with a stereo Neumann cutting lathe.

Engineers known to have worked here include Wendy Carlos.
