Are there any long rave documentaries or films depicting or explaining the scene worth watching? Which I haven't watched yet.
Covering the early years of house, techno, acid, hardcore etc? 1980s - to say 1992?
Firstly, forget about Human Traffic. Didn't rate that at all. Glossy, watered down shite. Besides, most of the music featured was epic trance and all of that clubby, progressive house mid to late '90s ibiza scene. Yuk.
I was pointed to "THE ACID HOUSE" by someone a good while back. What a load of bollocks that is. Seriously, I mean it has nothing to do with acid house, the scene or any of the sort. Looks like an off-shoot of a Glaswegian Junky yard of Channel 4's shameless. Instead of chavs, you get the scottish equivalent neds shagging best mates' girlfriends, heroin addicts etc. CRAP. With a capital C.
I've happened to watch the ' The Dance Years' presented by Dave Pearce many years ago. Pure commercial rubbish. More like the chart show than an underground selection.
Pump Up The Volume was the only half decent house music documentary. Shame it went downhill once it started to feature the likes of Goldie bragging about himself. And then UK garage ffs. Left out major music scenes like the belgian new beat / techno, dutch and german scenes. Didn't really go into detail about Detroit. And the UK hardcore scene was only notably referenced to Jungle & Drum n Bass circa late 1992 onwards really. Also, the Warp Records/bass n bleep which happened to be massive and very influential was completely ignored. But the first half involving the early house / Chicago era was pretty good overall. The very quick Joey Beltram interview was quite funny aswell.
There was a documentary several years back called '1989 the summer of rave'. That was quite funny in parts. Especially the DJ Fabio interviews. Although it featured too much chart music again and not enough underground tunage.
I might've forgotten to mention a couple more..
Are there any really decent documentaries / films worth watching that I'm not aware of? Btw whatever happened to the "Class of 88: The True Acid House Experience" ? I believe we were made to believe that it was going to be made into a film inspired by the book. -

Hi here are a few suggestions:
Clink Street Where's Your Child DVD - an hour of footage from the club with proper acid house soundtrack Armando Bam Bam etc. Features a youthful looking Mr C, Evil Eddie Richards, etc. I can do you a copy if you like.
A Short Film About Chilling - early 90s Ibiza scene. On Youtube.
World In Action - A Trip Around Acid House. On Youtube.
The Sound of Belgium DVD. Excellent doc on new beat scene. I can do you a copy if you like.
Channel 4 Music Nation. Bershire goes Balearic. On 4od. Haven't seen it yet but presume it's about Ibiza, Boys Own parties etc.
Chemical Nation. Channel 4 doc hosted by Boy George.
Evil Acid Baron Show. Trippy visuals with acid house soundtrack.
They Called in Acid. Excellent film about London acid house clubs. Saw it in the cinema in 2009. Not available online or DVD.
Hope this helps :)

Some knob did. I should've known better really as the guy doesn't know anything about house music. He's a bonafide Rock / Metal fiend who likes a bit of pop cheese for good measure. There is a DVD out called "Limelight". Its a documentary about the NYC club that is famous for bringing Dutch techno and UK 'Ardkore to the USA. It only mentioned it's 1992 techno role for a brief moment in the film. It was mostly about how at the time NYC mayor Rudi Guliani went to war with the owner Peter Gatian and won. I ended up also buying the movie poster for 30.00... not because I liked the documentary (it wasn't that great) but because I like the club.

Borteck in '92. Thanks for the heads up. It'd be interesting to watch a documentary or film about the early U.S. rave scene and hear what their take on it was. Or even more interesting what the Americans thought of the UK/European scene! Yes I know, I'm biased.
To be honest, I'm generally not that interested about the criminal element or stories about club promoters wars against eachother etc. It takes away the essence of the scene "the music and the partygoers". It seems movie directors feel the need to add a love interest, gang warfare or such to make things more exciting. Stick with the important things - the music! I'm sure the true heads, and there are enough of us around, who would watch the damn thing. Instead of trying to attract a wider audience purely for a few more bucks! Yeh, I know, I'm too ideological :P

I can give some background on this ridiculous US clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6E67jeds
In mid-1992, raves came to Ohio, which is mostly farmland deep in the Rust Belt, the USA's equivalent of the run-down north of England. By 1993, every weekend there was a party going on in some city within a 2 hour drive of wherever you were. There was very much a DIY spirit as many very different promoters came out of nowhere, all competing for a piece of a very small pie: there were 11 million people in the state, but never a party with more than 700 people at a time, usually way less than that.
Every party had a different vibe and a different degree of 'authenticity' depending on the taste of whoever was behind it. Most promoters were trying to distance themselves from the bar scene, but the one in this clip was organized by industrial club DJs who were fully immersed in it, and whose take on things was that techno was just the latest hard-as-nails sound for clubbers. Throwing a ticketed 'rave' for drunk frat boys in a carpeted banquet hall was the way to make some money and a name for themselves. (At least, that's what it seemed like to those of us in the much more underground crews who nevertheless bought tickets and dressed in our finest oversized shirts for the event.)
One of the headliners was a local industrial band which had latched onto hardcore rave sound about 6 months too late, and they were determined to shoot a video at this party. When they came on, it was announced that they had to turn the lights up for the cameras, and everyone should make it look good. The result is the bizarre scene you see in this clip. It was a one-off event, completely unrepresentative of the actual rave scene in the Midwest at that time, but now that I am older I can appreciate that for the majority of people there, it was a blast, the time of their lives... -

Yes mate wicked stuff. Cheers. Viewed that video from the other thread, very informative. Me and my mates heard Warlock live quite a few times back then in my more 'headbanging' days, namely Knowledge, Eurobeat 2000 etc and several one offs. Always enjoyed his sets, stayed true to what he himself liked.
Just thought I would give this a mention this is an interview we did with DJ Warlock talking about old raves flyers, tapes etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMjzmtPYKTE&t=25s&ab_channel=DistantPlanetTV
P.S. A bit of useless trivia: Warlock mentions DJ Anton in that interview, who happened to be on the same stations as himself 'Innocence FM' and 'Pulse FM'. He was also on 'Prophecy FM' in late 1990/Early 1991 and also Chillin FM for quite a long spell too. Was openly promoting Pulse FM long before it started over the airwaves when he was still broadcasting on Chillin FM. He was all over the place. Very prolific!
P.P.S. I'm intrigued by why the 'disgruntled' dj which Warlock alludes to was disgruntled for in the first place to grass him up to the authorities. -

New one on Manc dance scene
http://www.docnrollfestival.com/films/manchester-keeps-on-dancing
Blurb...
Dir. Javi Senz, 2017, UK, 90mins
Q&A guest TBA
A new feature film that documents – in exceptional detail – the arrival of House music in Manchester from Chicago in the 1980s, through to the Acid House explosion of 1988 and a further 30 years of its phenomenal impact. It is a truly remarkable social study of a subculture that helped put Manchester on the worldwide music map. Digging deeper than the story of the famed Haçienda, this documentary presents archive footage that has never been seen on film, alongside in-depth interviews with local and international DJs, to explore how House music arrived in the city and take viewers on a journey through its memorable stories.
The timeline begins pre-Haçienda and features contributions from each ensuing decade’s most respected DJs, producers, promoters and social commentators including Greg Wilson, Mike Pickering, Dave Haslam, Andrew Weatherall, Marshal Jefferson, Carl Craig, Eats Everything, Krysko, Ralph Lawson, Laurent Garnier, Todd Terry, Seth Troxler and many more.

Shame about the narrator. Sounds like he's got a carrot stuck up his arsehole or sucking on his own jepson.
Why is everything so f***in jungle dnb / uk garridge centric with most of these UK rave documentaries. I know DnB has been a massive part of the UK underground music scene, especially in the southern half of England and London. But UK film producers can't seem to go into detail about the early scene (before jungle) and seem to want to jump onto jungle asap. The bias is sickening. -

This program was shown last night on BBC Four. Touches on the early rave scene from about 13:45 minutes of the program https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b083dj11/the-peoples-history-of-pop-4-19861996-all-together-now
Strictly available for the UK bods I'm afraid.
P.S. Spot a very young Mr. Bones who very momentarily appears in the camera shot. If you blink you'll miss him :)
