Peter Hujar (October 11, 1934 – November 26, 1987) was born in Trenton, New Jersey, died of AIDS in 1987.
Hujar was a leading figure in the group of artists, musicians, writers, and performers at the forefront of the cultural scene in downtown New York in the 1970s and early 80s, and he was enormously ired for his completely uncompromising attitude towards work and life. Peter Hujar took iconic photos of Susan Sontag, Candy Darling, Divine, and his lover David Wojnarowicz. His photograph of Candy Darling on her deathbed in the hospital has been frequently reproduced.
