Flemish Baroque painter (1568, Brussels - 13 January 1625, Antwerp), son of Jan Brueghel The Younger (1601-1678). Court painter of the Austrian Archdukes Albert and Isabella Clara Eugenia. Nicknamed "Velvet" Brueghel, "Flower" Brueghel, and "Paradise" Brueghel, of which the latter two were derived from his floral still lifes which were his favored subjects. Also known in various languages as Jan Brueghel I, Jan Brueghel de Oude, Jan Brueghel l'Ancien, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (d.Ä.) etc. His most common nickname has been variously translated as Fluwelen Brueghel, Brueghel de Velours and Samtbrueghel. |
